My 9 year old needed some extra math practice, so I chose him to review Matific Galaxy on an old iPhone that my mom gave to him a few weeks ago. We received a one year, one student subscription, and we chose to use it exclusively through iOs for practicing grade-level math concepts anytime in a fun, gaming environment!
Matific Galaxy is available for grades K-6, and they have products to where you can purchase a single grade level, like we did for Grade 3, or a package with all of the grade level activities available. The games can be played on iOs and Android devices, or you can play on your computer using the online website version.
I assigned Matific Galaxy as a daily math resource during this review period. My kids finished their main math curriculum several weeks ago, but we’re still doing school, and I require them to read every day and do some kind of math activities every day as well. This is the perfect program for filling that need!
There are several different options for playing games, and lots of ways to customize the galaxy. There are paid upgrades that your student can add on if they’d like, but we’ve found the regular app to be more than enough.
My son liked that there was so much variety, because he has used other math supplements that were rigid and dry. This program is not that at all! It is colorful, extensive, quick, responsive, and interactive.
When using the app, students can drag and drop and use their touch screens to quickly get through their activities.
There are all sorts of ways for kids to earn extra points as rewards. They can view this any time by clicking on the trophy icon. It shows the name of the achievement, their progress, how to earn it, and what the reward is. Once they’ve earned one, it fills the bar up fully green and they get a big check mark.
I know my son is enjoying structured lessons in a fun gaming format. He has been playing, on average, 2 games a day. I asked, and he said that each game takes him about 5 minutes to complete. He told me that the games he has been playing have been a good review of math he’s already been taught in his main math curriculum, so it’s been a good supplement for the summer.
A few minutes a day can really boost your child’s math knowledge and confidence. If your kid is anything like mine, they’ll be asking to play this one!
Parent’s Zone
If you want to see what your child has been working on and how they are doing, you can always log in to the Parent’s Zone. This is accessed through their account and you just click on “For Parents >”. I like that you can see, at a glance, how much they’ve completed overall in the program.
If you want to look further into their progress and achievements in the game, you can click “See Report” to find out what skills they have been practicing and how well they’ve been doing. As you can see, Heath has been acing the geometry, basic fraction, and numbers skills by just playing fun games a little bit each day!
I’m really impressed with all of the different math skills that kids are able to practice and master through Matific Galaxy. You can view a full list on the Math Skills area of their website.
Below is just a sampling of what Grade 3 covers in the app:
Overall, I really do like this app. My 9 year old son enjoys it, too, and likes how quick it is to play on days when we are short on time or he just wants to play on screens a little bit.
I think my 7 year old would love it as well. That sweet child likes a challenge, but has a short attention span, so this would be PERFECT for him!
Many other families had the opportunity to review this online math resource. It is for students in grades K-6, or those that are performing math concepts at those levels. Each family used this product differently to fit into their time and educational philosophy, so it’s interesting to hear about what everybody else did.
