On our way to the Adventurecon blogging conference put on by Sea World San Antonio earlier this month, we stopped by my absolute favorite bakery ever. Czech Stop.
I’ve visited this particular bakery so many times over the years. It’s part of my heritage, and a mandatory visit must be made each year while in town visiting West Fest. That’s a Czech and Polka Festival held every year over Labor Day weekend in the (now famous) West, Texas.
Going to this (in my mind) historic spot with my kids was so special. I’ve spent a lot of time eating and trying to recreate their delicious, authentic Czech kolaches. They have about a billion varieties, and this place is always hopping. Did I mention that it’s open, including the bakery, 24/7? YUMMMM!
Czech Stop is a gas station for anyone that is dumb enough not to go inside, but a wonderland of delicious pastries and deli items for those that are wanting their tastebuds to be satisfied and delighted. Even though it broke all the paleo rules, I had to have a poppy seed kolache. Okay. 2 poppyseed kolaches. Oh, and 3 more on the drive back through town.
Can you see the love put into this heavenly morsel? The delicate, flavorful, flaky pastry surrounding the warm and sweet poppyseed filling? Yes, sprinkled with sugar on top. Heaven.
I don’t regret going. I don’t regret eating them. The slight heartburn and sore throat from eating these things my body thinks it hates was worth it all.

I’ve never heard of a kolache, but your post makes me want to try one 🙂 I was in Prague, Czech a couple years ago…now I’m thinking I probably ate a kolache or two, but can’t recall the name!
This is a bit off topic, but….what was the single most important thing you learned at the blogging conference?

You know, I’ve been through West so many times, but never stopped there (probably because my husband is allergic to nearly all baked goods…bu still).

I lived (way too many years ago) for a brief time in Wichita Falls, TX. I don’t remember West but isn’t that the fun of travel – going into a place and finding something totally unexpected. A 24/7 bakery with Czech specialties. I am going to tweet this.

We always stop on the way to and from Hill Country. Must eat is a Gingerbread teddy bear and a meat kolache. Then we load up a dozen strawberry cream kolaches and go on our way! Such a great plact of memories over the year!

I absolutely love that stop but just wished it wasn’t always so busy.
