With it being the end of the year, I’m curious to know exactly how well my older kids have been doing with their math curriculum and how we can close learning gaps. We reviewed a product from A+ Interactive Math called Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan to find out just how well my kids have been retaining their math lessons.
Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan
The Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan is an entirely online-based homeschool math curriculum that is meant to identify learning gaps and instruct students so they can be proficient in grade-level math skills. This is a product that can be a stand-alone product for afterschooling, homeschooling, or even as a tutor for students with learning gaps.
Once they have taken the test, they will immediately find out if they passed or failed. If they pass, they are free to move on to another concept. If they fail, the program assigns them lessons to help teach (or reteach) them the skill so that they can learn and test on grade level for it. These lessons are short videos with practice test questions.
There are also interactive, online worksheets for them to complete, if they choose, to continue to solidify the information for them. Once they have reviewed the lesson plans and/or worksheets, your student can retake the test.
Again, once they pass, they are free to work on other concepts and that skill will be marked as complete for them (it turns from red to green on the skill list so they can also quickly see that it’s complete).
If they fail again, they are able to review the lessons and worksheets again and retake it another time. The goal is to close those learning gaps by first identifying them and then giving solid instruction to help the student understand and apply the information.
The subscription to this program is for 3 months and levels available are 1st grade – Algebra 1. This makes it perfect for many scenarios, including over the summer use to get students at grade level before the next school year. The lessons are concise and there is no distracting fluff to get in the way of real learning. When problems are missed, students are able to view step-by-step solutions, not just the correct answer.
Our Experience with A+ Interactive Math Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan
I originally signed 3 of my kids up for this. My 5 year old is great at math, and then I have 2nd and 4th graders. My 5 year old was in way over his head with the 1st grade math. Again, I find that this program is fairly advanced. I chose to use it just for my oldest 2 kiddos.
Initially, I had them start from the very beginning and try the tests from the first skill and work their way down. After a few of these, I decided to let them bounce around and complete them in whatever order they want.
I loved that I could review things on my parent account. Better than that, though, is that they were able to review their own tests when they were finished and see what they got wrong (and what they did correctly, of course).
When my kids were unable to pass a test, I immediately had them review the test to see what they missed. Then, I had them work on the lessons and practice questions. Sometimes there were several sub-skills they needed to work on, so I would only have them do 2-3 lessons that day and would space the lessons out over several days before having them retest. If they just needed to work on one specific thing, I would ask them to do the lessons and questions and then attempt the test again that same day.
I loved that solutions were available for problems that they missed so they could quickly and easily review what they got wrong and figure out how they might do better on their next attempt.
We have been using this program 3-4 times a week and my kids still have about half of it left to go. We have plenty of time left in our subscription for them to complete it and then I will officially let them “graduate” from their grade level of math!
Would I Recommend A+ Interactive Math?
Absolutely! I am amazed at how much my kids have learned in such a short amount of time. If you have a student that has holes in their math knowledge or might be behind grade level, this program will help. Not only that, but it can help you to see where your math curriculum might be failing your student and help fill in the learning gaps quickly and painlessly.
The interactive lessons and exercises help them to learn quickly and retain the information. The tests help you to weed out the information that they already know and are proficient in so you don’t waste valuable time reviewing things they have already mastered.
We are loving this program, and I am proud of how my kids are gaining new skills!
