So I have been thinking about this a lot lately. How do you know when you should take a car in for regular maintenance or repairs? We recently paid off one of our vehicles and will hopefully pay off our other one when our house sells. I want to keep them in good shape because we don’t have the time, patience, or money to have them laid up in a repair shop somewhere over something that could have easily been prevented due to regular maintenance.
I came across a cool site today and thought I’d share it with you. It’s called RepairPal and it provides a really great service that I know I’m going to use. Not to mention it’s free! You can enter in your car’s information under My Car and track repairs, get updates on recalls, save maintenance information, etc. Then when you really do have something happen to your vehicle and you’re wondering if your mechanic is trying to overcharge, you can go to their Estimator, enter in your vehicle’s information and your zip code, and then you can look at average pricing for whatever type of repair it is.
I wish I had known about this site last year when my van (which I don’t have any more!) needed some steep repair work. It would have been nice to have a point of reference as far as price so I could have known for sure whether or not I wanted to get it fixed or let it go. (Ultimately, I ended up just letting it go and using it as a trade-in.)
How do you handle repairs and maintenance on your vehicles? Do you go by the recommended standards in your car’s manual? Does your normal mechanic keep you updated? Do you just drive and pray that all is well? 🙂
