Those in my friend circle know that I’m a huge supporter of the idea of a CSA (or Community Supported Agriculture). I was a member of one in 2010 and LOOOVED it, so of course I’m in again for 2011!
Basically, each week during the harvest times, I receive a generous share of the farm’s bounty. At the farm my CSA is at, that includes things like half a dozen or more types of greens, radishes, pok choi, and more during the fall and spring, and lots of other delicious things in the spring and summer like onions, garlic, winter squash of all kinds, lots of summer squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, blackberries, Isreli melon, tomatoes, eggplant, tons of types of pepper, and so SO much more. It is WONDERFUL!!!
If you’ve seen any of the movies out right now like Food, Inc, Future of Food, Food Matters, Fresh, or a whole host of other documentaries, you know how important it is to support our local farmers! The way that the food market has been industrialized just cannot be sustained long term and really needs to swing away from the current status quo and turn into something more stable, healthy, and fresh.
I’m really excited to be a part of it! The catch is that I pay upfront (I just made my last payment yesterday for the entire year of 2011 and I’ll start receiving produce in March, probably.) and volunteering is appreciated. Honestly, I *love* to help out and I take my kids up there almost every week.
Our CSA also has egg shares and might have honey shares! Woohoo! We love eating fresh, local, seasonal produce that is made without the use of genetically modified seeds and without pesticides. It tastes awesome and it can’t get any fresher!!!
If you want to see if there’s a CSA (or farm market or farm) near you, check out LocalHarvest.org. You can also check out this video for some more info on CSAs. 🙂
My sister is involved in CSA in California and goes on and on about it! My father also is involved and is in Nebraska and he specializes in Italian heirloom vegetables which he then sells to the public and to the university and some restaurants! Such a wonderful thing and his veggies are amazing!
Just found you through Bloggy Moms so now I am following!
