My children love to get mail. My daughter, in particular, is always jealous when she sees me receive a magazine or package. We were recently blessed to receive a complimentary subscription to the God’s World News publication for Grades 3 & 4 called News Flash.
There are several magazines available from God’s World News, ranging from pre-k all the way to high school level. Each annual subscription includes 10 issues throughout the school year (except December and May), as well as a 20″ x 30″ Map-It world map poster, which is included with the September issue of the magazines (excluding the high school magazine, Trak).
Each magazine issue covers world news and stories. They include articles about cultures, sports, science, history, biographies, geography, and more. There are puzzles, quizzes, and several opportunities for readers to link the story to the Bible and to their own life as well.
Subscriptions are just $28, which includes shipping. They also offer quantity discounts for any families that have 2 or more subscriptions to GWN shipped to the same address.
News Flash – The Print Magazine
News Flash is a 32 page, full-color magazine for Grades 3 & 4. It gives a Christian world view of current events, history, and more. They say that they emphasize News, Knowledge, and Wisdom. It is suitable for boys and girls at or around ages 8-10. My daughter loves it!
Engaging and Relevant
We have received 3 issues and the map so far. Unlike the other magazines that my daughter has received in the past, this one is full of actual news. She loves to read the stories, and I love that she is learning.
For example, the first story in the October 2013 issue is about mining in South Africa. We were able to get the map out and show her where South Africa is located. Additionally, the magazine gave a Country Profile so that she could learn more about what is typical in the region.
Another wonderful article in that issue is entitled Why People Move. It begins talking about Adam and Eve! How neat to have a magazine that is Biblically-based in its reporting. The article continues to talk about different cultures and their reasons for moving from place to place, mentioning various countries (which we were able to locate on the map). There is also a timeline discussing people on the move over the span of more than 4,000 years with Biblical references which can be studied and discussed.
Fun and Educational
My daughter also really enjoyed the Puzzling Times feature in the book. The puzzles are relevant to the articles from the current issue and challenging! Many of the answers are based on Bible verses, too. These puzzles help hone the skills that were touched on in the content of the magazine.
While the puzzles are fun, they aren’t FLUFF!
Online Content
With any subscription to a God’s World News magazine, you get access to a ton of high quality online content! Here is a glimpse at what I see when I log in:
As you can see, parents get access to digital magazines, extended lessons (which provide a more in-depth treatment of fascinating subjects in science, history, geography, worldview and other subjects.), over 120 biographies, and even a digital version of Map-It!
There are kid and teen God’s World News websites available for your student to access for themselves, which comes free with the print subscription as well. It is loaded with content related to science, technology, fun stuff, and so much more.
My favorite online feature, in general, is their weekly e-newsletter! The newsletter provides you with links to downloadable answer keys, topical lessons on the websites, biographies, digital magazine editions, and more.
We love this resource!
We have been using this as a social studies, history, geography, AND Bible study supplement to our regular homeschooling days! I really feel like you get a lot of bang for your buck with this subscription. Best of all, I don’t have to censor the content or worry about my daughter reading something inappropriate or of mature/adult content. Everything between the front to back covers is safe, age-appropriate, and highly educational.
I will be looking into subscribing my younger children to the other levels of the God’s World News magazines. They’ve gotten a little jealous of their sister’s mail, especially when they see how long she sits and reads it. I have to admit, we have read several of the stories together as a family, and she loves reading anything funny to them!
