Here is how we chose to go with a new home:
Past experiences with an older home steered us away from buying another one.
We chose an older home as our first one about seven years ago and pretty much regretted it from day one. We are NOT fixer-uppers and had no idea what to do when things went haywire. We like that a new home is less likely to have the major, expensive issues of an older home. We have the first year under warranty to work out some kinks and will go from there. We were most scared about old pipes, bad electrical, or hidden pests.
The cost difference wasn’t substantial.
For the same price, we could purchase a home that was…. well, the same square footage but older. Since we already decided that we didn’t know how to fix things, it was apparent that we needed a home that would be a bit more effortless, at least for a time! When looking around and what was available, the most bang for the buck was with a new home.
The type of floor plan we wanted wasn’t available in a previously built home.
Let’s face it, I’ve had dreams of what I’ve wanted my home to be like since we first started looking at house 7 years ago, before we purchased our first one. Now that I know more of my family dynamic (a LOT has changed in those seven years!), I had a much better idea of what I wanted. When we looked around at existing homes for sale, nothing jumped out at me and the floorplans would work, but weren’t JUST right. When I saw the floorplan to this home, I knew it was the one!
I realize that everyone’s area is different, everyone has different dreams and desires for a home. Heck, there are a lot of people that don’t want to own at all! I wanted to share some of our thought processes in deciding to build instead of buy pre-owned.

One day we will move…one day! The only thing that makes me want to go with an older home is that they tend to have larger bedrooms…not always but often. Some of these new homes try to jam pack too much into one house.
