This year, we’ve been doing little things here and there to help others in our community. We adopted 2 little kiddos off of the Angel Tree by the Salvation Army. My daughter had a lot of fun with that because both were girls, and she has apparently never wanted anything more than to have a sister! It was good enough for her getting to shop for them, especially the 2 month old. She chose some precious owl blankies, jammies, and a matching toy. It was precious to see her get so excited! I dragged all of the kiddos out to the mall to dump off our donations, too! Now when there are commercials or news segments on TV about the Angel Tree, they immediately identify with it personally and get excited. They exclaim, “We did that Angel Tree!!!” It’s really cool to see.
Today, we had a Girl Scout event with our Service Unit that was chock full of service, too. We met together and brought clothing donations for a local clothing closet. Then we made cards to take with us to go caroling at a nursing home. My daughter thought it was a lot of fun, and she always begs for extra opportunities to see her Girl Scout friends, so that was a no-brainer!
I’m hoping to do at least one more service project involving the whole family before the holiday season is over. While my baby and my 3 year old don’t really understand what is going on, I’m hoping that I’ll help to create a heart of service for them. I want them to think back on their childhood and remember helping others with a joyful spirit rather than as a sense of obligation or dragging their feet with dread.
What are some ways that your family shows love and kindness?
I would love some ideas!!!
