Watching children learn and grow can be super fun. On the other hand, it can be very challenging, too. My youngest is 16 months and his 16 month old vocabulary seems to be great. However, he really does like to push all of my buttons.
He doesn’t mean to act like a little terror. No, he is just being curious and is quite bright. He doesn’t mean to fall so hard onto my face to wake me up in the morning that my first thoughts are, “Ow,” and, “Why do I smell blood in my nose?”
He’s very rambunctious, but I’m glad to see him growing and thriving. My degree is in Child & Family Studies and I’ve always been interested in child development.
That’s why I decided to write down (type) some words that Charlie says. Obviously, his speech is far from perfect, but I do think it’s cool to do lists like this so that I can go back and see his developmental progression.
His 16 Month Old Vocabulary:
Muh (milk)
No (exaggerated OOOOO face)
Yeah
Ow
Uh Oh
Mama
Dad
Ahh Uhh! (All Done – and he does the “finished” sign language with it)
Hi
Words he has said before:
App (apple)
nana (banana)
Up
Bye
Yes
Right On!
Apparently, he is right on track. According to child development sites I looked at and books I have read, he’s right on track. Children should know between 5-20 words by 18 months. He’s well on his way.
He Knows SO MUCH More..
It must be so frustrating for kids of this age. He knows so much more than he can say.
One thing that always amazes me is how much he can understand and do. He follows directions fairly well. Charlie knows what I mean when I say, “Get down!” or, “No, Sir!” He also gets it when I ask him to put a cup back up in the cabinet or to sit down.
When did your kids start talking?
How old were they and what were their first words?

He’s so darn cute!!! Mine have both been talkers, but Claire is the talkiest little thing ever…I think it’s a girl thing.

What a great idea to keep track of the words they can at their gae. It’s fun seeing them learn
