What a treat! I received the book Angel Harp: A Novel by Michael Phillips in the mail a while back and immediately started reading bits and pieces of it. I was finally able to finish it this week (It is a 431 page book, so it took me a bit with my 3 kids driving me bonkers every time I’d sit down to be alone. haha!) and I am so glad I read it!
The main character, Mari Buchan, has become a widow and is truly trying to find her place in life. She is an accomplished harpist and decides to set off across the ocean to Scotland to visit historic little villages that she’d always wanted to explore with her late husband.
While she’s there, a quick trip turns into something more. She meets, and becomes part of, a fun little community and begins making friends with many colorful characters. Keeping up with their dialect proved difficult for me at first and I kept having to go back to the appendix of the book to get a translation, but after about 20 pages, I was easily able to tell what they were saying. 😉
Anyway, Marie meets a busybody bed and breakfast owner, a minister, the Duke, and a sweet little girl that has a keen gift for playing the harp. Her visit turns more into an actual residence in the community, and what unfolds is a story that will pull at your heartstrings and leave you needing a tissue or two.
This book does have a Christian slant to it and is filled with Scottish history and culture. It’s unlike any other book I’ve read! It sort of reminds me of historical fiction, but it is set in present day times. I really enjoyed it and I know you will too!!
