The Gruffalo’s Child is the fun, enchanting sequel to the Academy Award-nominated short, The Gruffalo, based on the beloved children’s book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. This story, which is narrated by an all-star cast, is sure to be a family favorite!
In The Gruffalo’s Child, the Gruffalo tells his daughter an extraordinary story of “The Big Bad Mouse,” warning his child never to go in the woods alone because there is a terrible creature lurking there. Waiting until her dad falls asleep, the Gruffalo’s Child sneaks out into the deep dark woods to see The Big Bad Mouse for herself. Along the way she runs into a snake, an owl, and a fox and discovers that while they each have similar features to The Big Bad Mouse, they are, in fact, not him. Just as she has decided that she doesn’t think the Big Bad Mouse exists, she stumbles upon a tiny mouse. Cautious of her (she IS a Gruffalo after all!), the mouse listens to what the Gruffalo’s Child is looking for, and then decides to reveal his big bad secret!
My kids loved the book and then adored the DVD. The DVD runs longer than the story as it does elaborate on the book. The animations are vibrant and beautiful, and we loved the voices used to tell the story. A special bonus feature on the DVD is a special behind-the-scenes look at the movie!

I heartily recommend this movie to anyone with little kids. The art and story are really fun and cute, and the 40 min runtime is perfect for little ones. Not to mention that it encourages your kids to read the book (my favorite part). I am so glad that a Dish coworker tipped me off to this one. They said that the original was one of their favorites, and that they still watch it. So I decided to rent it through my Blockbuster @Home account, and it came in the mail on Monday. The boys have watched it every day since (sometimes more than once). I really love being able to rent movies to test out whether they will watch them more than once. This one is definitely a keeper, I hope I win! My kids’ favorite movie is Wall-E.
