My kids and I commute at least a few times a week to activities that are at least 20 minutes away from our house. Sometimes we listen to the radio, sometimes we listen to a collection of children’s stories on CD, sometimes we listen to Adventures in Odyssey, and on particularly special occasions (well, not really – any day will do!) we listen to children’s music on CD.
I recently received a copy of “Someone Else’s Shoes”, which will be released July 31st by Recess Music. (Check out their store around July 10th for a special pre-order offer or sign up on their mailing list to get notified and receive special offers!) My kids and I have been bopping along to these clever tunes for the past several days and I felt like it was time to share my thoughts with you!
This album has been produced to help children – and their grown ups – to take a moment to step back and see things from others’ perspectives. There are 15 songs on the album and it runs around 46 minutes. Each song has its own unique sound and the album explores many genres of music. If you hate buying a kids’ album only to find that each song sounds exactly like the one before it, have no fear! This album will NOT disappoint you like that!
“All the songs on Someone Else’s Shoes highlight empathy as a key ingredient for living in harmony with others. The album features 15 tracks that showcase contributions by a sampling of some of today’s most gifted kids’ musicians, including two-time GRAMMY®winners Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, four-time Emmy® winning composer/performer Jamie Broza, and Parents’ Choice® and NAPPA winner Swingset Mamas.”
Our favorite songs were “Feel the World Dancing” and “There’s No Such Thing As Normal!”. The quality of this album is incredible and didn’t come across as a cheesy kid album to us at all! That’s not to say there aren’t some silly lyrics and funny lines, but the music is solid and the message is great. Acceptance, tolerance, positive self-image, and more are touted as important… and I love it!
If you’re interested, Recess Music has several awesome collections available for purchase. CDs are $12.99 each and there are titles that are part of their CELEBRATE EARTH series as well as their BEST FOOT FORWARD series (which includes “Someone Else’s Shoes”). They are available for purchase here.

We are loving this CD and will continue to listen to it on our commutes to gymnastics or lunch with Dad. 🙂 I think I’m going to check out their other music as well!
*I received a complimentary review copy of this CD to try out with my own kidlets. All opinions expressed in this post, and the rest of my blog, are mine alone! 🙂 This was reviewed with a 7 year old, 5 year old, 2 year old, and newborn in the vehicle. Yes, we cranked it up… and my 7 year old sang along LOUDLY.

My son loves his two kids song CDs and I’m getting pretty sick of hearing them, haha! Time for something new! Thanks for this recommendation – I’ll check it out!
