I’ve been doing a ton of working out lately, so naturally I always want to know just how many calories I’m burning! When I was sent a new product to review from Best Buy called the Misfit Shine, I was really excited to get started using it.
Please note, you MUST have an iPhone, iPad, etc to use this device. It is run by syncing to an app that is only available in the Apple App Store. Shine works with iPhone 4S,5,5S,5C, iPod 5th Gen, and iPad 3rd & 4th Gen and iPad Mini.
This was not noted anywhere on the Best Buy website and the information was sort of hidden on the Misfit website. I was under the impression, prior to receiving it, that it would be compatible with my Android phone or that the app was optional, but that simply is not the case. The app helps to sync all of the data so that you can track your progress over the long-term and is totally necessary, in my opinion.
To try it out, I borrowed my mom’s iPhone and got down to business!
Carefully Assemble Your Shine
This product is very unique. I was intimidated when I first opened it, but made sure to be very careful when opening it. You see, the disc part of it is in the center of the packaging and all of the accessories, the battery, etc are behind the packaging you can see when you purchase it.
After about 5 minutes, I had figured out how to get it open, place the battery in there, and attach it to the sport band (so I could wear it like a watch!). It fit comfortably and securely. It also came with a magnetic clip that you could use to wear it on your collar, belt loop, or wherever you prefer.
Download the App and Get Synced
Download the app from the Apple app store and follow the directions to sync the Shine device to the app. Then you get started setting your goals and choosing which activities you want to track.
I didn’t wear mine the full day my first time using it, so I didn’t meet my 600 point (steps) goal! Boo! I did love wearing it, though. It’s sleek and stylish.
It was pretty fun checking throughout the day to see how I was doing. Since I was borrowing my mom’s phone for the review, I wasn’t able to check on the app and sync it throughout the day. Honestly, I don’t think anyone would want to do it that often anyway. Daily or weekly sounds good for looking over the results.
I did, however, get to check on my progress using the Misfit Shine itself by simply tapping on its face. The lights luminate on there to give you a visual representation of how well you’re doing toward reaching your goals. You can also tap it to check the time. My son begged me to do that several times throughout the day!
When you’re ready to sync it to your phone, it’s easy and quick!
Please note that it only tracks certain activities. It will not track like a standard heart rate monitor, but it is accurate in tracking activities like swimming, walking, or biking.
Shine is exclusively available in additional colors at Best Buy including Silver, Black, Champagne and Topaz.
