Set in the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland, Disney•Pixar’s “Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to change her fate, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) andcantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane), unleashing chaos in the kingdom. When she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters), she is granted an ill-fated wish and the ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her resources—including her mischievous triplet brothers—to undo a beastly curse and discover the meaning of true bravery. Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and signature Pixar humor. Opens on June 22, 2012, in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.
I was fortunate enough to view a press screening for this movie yesterday! I took my 5 year old son and held baby Charlie (9 weeks) during the film. He mostly slept… and nursed. lol
If you have young children and are considering seeing the movie, please keep in mind that it is rated PG for “Scary Action and Rude Humor”. The humor in the movie didn’t seem bad to me at all, but I can certainly see where it would be too scary for many young viewers. My 5 year old was a bit frightened, but I told him he could close his eyes or cover them if scenes were too intense. There are VERY realistic bears that roar loud, bellowing cries and they look even more scary in 3D! If your child is prone to nightmares or gets freaked out by scary animals, you might want to wait for the DVD/Blu-Ray to come out as the lower volume and smaller images might be less frightening.
I *loved* that this was not another movie revolved around the princess pursuing a love interest (or vice versa!). The message in this movie was one of family bonds and learning to appreciate and love people for who they are. (No romance necessary to convey it – imagine that!) The characters were endearing and lovable. Keep in mind that there was magic and a witch in the movie. If you are uncomfortable with that theme for your children, then I would suggest that you preview it before seeing it with your kids to see if it will work for your family.
The whole theater erupted in laughter so many times during this cleverly-written film that I lost count. The quality of the film was outstanding. Disney/Pixar really outdid themselves with gorgeous landscapes, incredible detailing (on the hair and texture of clothing, specifically!), and realistic, yet fun, characters. It was delightful to be able to really enjoy this amazing quality while also enjoying the story line!
I highly recommend this movie for families to see together! If you are worried that it’ll be too girly and princess-y for your little guys to enjoy, DO NOT FEAR! It is a terrific film that reaches beyond the gender barrier here because of the great message and lack of romance. 🙂 It is a must-see for this summer!
Check it out! It’s in theaters now. 🙂 Like Brave on Facebook, too!
*I was provided press passes to attend a pre-release screening of the movie. The opinions expressed in this blog posting are mine alone, as always!

I love your review! And I totally agree on the “scary” nature of the bears. I mentioned it in my post as well. Glad to know your 5 yr old enjoyed it. I took my 15 yr old son and am curious to see how my younger girls react. 🙂
My boys are off to see it now and I am so glad to know that it will be something that they will enjoy!
I cannot wait to take my 7 YO daughter and 5 YO son! Thanks for the great write up 🙂
I have been wanting to see this movie since the trailer first started coming on months ago. I know my 4 year old daughter would love it, might have to be a mom/daughter date day!
