Have you ever tried your hand at making your own donuts? If you have a donut pan, they can be really easy to whip together. This homemade apple chocolate chip donuts recipe tells you how to make the donuts and their delicious chocolate icing, too. It’s easier than you think to have fresh donuts to share with your family and friends!

My favorite part of this recipe is how it has chocolate chips for garnish. I like the mini ones, but you could also go for candy-coated or chocolate sprinkles instead. It’s really just a personal preference, and whichever one you choose will add a tasty flavor and texture to the final product.

Homemade Apple Chocolate Chip Donuts

Recipe makes: 1 dozen

Prep time: 30 minutes

Cook time: 15 minutes

Donut Ingredients You Will Need:

1 box of spice cake mix
1 1/2 cup applesauce
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp pie spice
1 cup chocolate chips for the batter
1/2 cup chocolate chips for garnish

Donut Icing Ingredients You Will Need:

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1 tbsp light corn syrup

1 tsp vanilla

1 – 3 tbsp water

1/4 c + 2 tbsp. cocoa powder

To Make the ICING:

Simply whisk all ingredients together in a stand mixer, using the water to adjust for desired consistency.

Cover and set to the side.

To Make the DONUTS:

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Spray a donut pan with non-stick baking spray.

3. In a large bowl, add cake mix, apple sauce, pie spice, and cinnamon, and mix to combine.

4. Add your chocolate chips to the batter and mix to combine.

5. Pour the batter into the donut pan.

6. Bake for 12-14 minutes.

7. Remove the donuts from the oven and let them cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Once donuts are cool remove from the pan.

8. Set up a baking tray with a cookie cooling rack on top. One at a time, dip the top of each donut into the icing and place on the cooling rack.

9. Garnish with chocolate chips.

10. Repeat until all are coated and garnished.
