One of the things my family has missed the most since going paleo is cereal. My kids, hubby, and I would easily go through 4 boxes a week. Granted, we knew it wasn’t the healthiest thing, but it was so darn easy and convenient. Now I just make my own Paleo cereal!
Paleo Cereal is Grain Free
Making this cereal is definitely a bit of an investment. The first thing you’ll want to do is realize that you will NOT be eating a huge, heaping bowl of it at a time. The ingredients are filling and hearty, unlike the processed standard cereal you’d find in a box.
Gather Your Ingredients
Paleo cereal is all about your personal tastes and preferences. If there are certain nuts or fruits you like, by all means – use them! Here is what I like to use in ours:
Pick Your Favorite Nuts, Fruit, and Coconut
There are so many delicious combinations you can use to make a paleo cereal that the family will love. This truly is a make-your-own kind of recipe. I’m going to tell you what *I* did, but I’m also giving you some ratios to work with.
*4 cups of nuts
We like to do combinations of nuts. I used whole almonds, pecan halves, and chopped walnuts. I really love to use slivered almonds or sliced almonds for their unique texture. Sometimes I toast them, sometimes I don’t. Our store was out before I made this batch.

If I am not using pre-chopped or slivered nuts, I sometimes blend them for 2-3 seconds in the Vitamix. (Don’t do it for longer than that, or you’ll be making nut butter!) This adds interesting texture to the cereal and is really easy.

Once I’m done chopping the nuts in the blender (totally optional), I pour them into a clean, dry, lidded container.
*1 Cup of Fruit
This one is totally up to you. You can go ahead and add in freeze-dried fruit (like the berries I used), dry fruit (raisins, chopped apricots), or you can hold off and just use fresh fruit when you make your cereal. Blueberries and bananas are terrific as a fresh addition on this cereal and they add more texture and sweetness as well!
I went ahead and added a mixed cup of fruit to mine so that it would be ready to go when the kids went looking for a fast breakfast. When I have them, I love to put chopped dates or goji berries. Freeze dried pineapple can be a lot of fun, too!
*1 cup of coconut
Coconut is optional, and this amount will be for the coconut lover! I like to use unsweetened. You can toast this ahead of time or just use it plain.
SOMETIMES I am a nice mom and add in a little bit of dark chocolate chips in place of some of the coconut or in addition to it. They love finding surprise bits of goodness.

Add in your coconut and give it a stir or a shake to blend everything together!
Store in an air-tight container for a quick, filling breakfast!
I serve mine with unsweetened coconut milk or almond milk, but my kids sometimes eat it with actual cow’s milk if we have any in the house. Sometimes we top it with sliced bananas. For my 21 Day Sugar Detox, I would make this without the dried fruit and top with half of a green-tipped banana.
This makes a great late-night snack as well as a morning meal. If you aren’t paleo, it makes a yummy yogurt topping, too.
Do you love cereal?
This paleo cereal is satisfying, delicious, customizable, and a lot more nourishing than anything you can find in a box!
What have you tried in your diet to replace regular cereal?

yum yum yum! im not paleo but so trying this! the coconut in it is making my mouth water. 🙂
It’s SO good! If you want it a little sweeter without adding more fruit, a light drizzle of pure maple syrup or local honey is wonderful!

It looks really yummy! But, I have a question. That has to be high in calories, so how does that help to control weight?

You eat a smaller portion because a little goes a long way…. plus, when you cut out processed foods, grains, beans, dairy, etc from your diet, you have a lot of calories “freed up” to consume by way of fresh fruit, veggies, meat, fats, nuts, and seeds. 🙂 I lost a lot of weight doing The 21 Day Sugar Detox and have maintained my loss without counting calories by just eating paleo. 🙂

I do. And I’ve heard so many great things about the Paleo diet. My cousin is on it and he has lost so much weight.

It has helped me to lose and maintain my weight! (Maintenance if I’m eating a fair amount of fruits! lol) It helps me to feel so much better, too. Great digestive help, no more joint pains, I sleep better, my skin looks better… It’s really crazy what a difference this diet makes.
