If you’re like me, one of the first classic tales you remember hearing and loving as a child is The Tale of Peter Rabbit. We received a review copy of this title from Kinder Cottage Publishing, as well as a copy of the second book in the series, Peter Rabbit at the Farm.
Kinder Cottage Publishing has simplified the language in the 10 Book Peter Rabbit Series so that children of our time will understand a little better by slightly updating a little bit of the language while staying faithful to the original stories. For example, if your children found the word velocipede in the story, would they have any clue what was being discussed? No! Kinder Cottage has translated that to bicycle, which is the exact same thing but in modern language.
The classic illustrations brought a smile to my face, and my children were intrigued as they’re not used to the style at all. It was exciting to turn from page to page to discover what would happen to Peter Rabbit next.
When I received these in the mail, my kids insisted that we read them both – immediately! Since that day, I’ve read each again a handful of times because they just enjoy them so much.
The Tale of Peter Rabbit
In the first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, we meet the lovable character. My kids were vaguely familiar with the story, and were surprised at how naughty Peter was acting! My 4 year old son was genuinely concerned about how Peter was going to get out of Mr. McGregor’s property and was eager to turn the pages for me so we could continue along reading.
My older children have been taking the book off to read it to themselves and to each other, as well. They appreciate that each page of text is opposite of a page that contains the illustration. It’s easy to read, with short snippets on each text page. I love books that do this, because I often find there are too many words on a page and they are even more difficult to read when they’re among the illustrations. This one, like many classic literature pieces, separates them nicely.
Overall, my kids loved this story and wanted to immediately move on to the next!
Peter Rabbit at the Farm
I wasn’t familiar with this story before we received our review copy. In this one, we were introduced to all sorts of fun animal characters, including Pollie Possum, Little Goosie Poosie, Daddy Gander, Ducky Daddles, and even Old Growler (Mr. McGregor’s watch dog).
As with the first story, Peter Rabbit gets into a bit of a pickle and must count on the kindness of others and his own smarts to find his way home. He helps others in the process, and reading this one felt like a fun little trip back to a simpler time.
The Peter Rabbit Series by Kinder Cottage Publishing
The Peter Rabbit Series published by Kinder Cottage Publishing is appropriate for all ages. I think ages 3 and up would love them. For younger kids, they can get wrapped up in the stories and use their imaginations to think about the storylines even further.
As homeschool tools, it would be a lot of fun to make a lap book or draw pictures to learn more and express their thoughts about Peter Rabbit! These books would also make an excellent starting point for some writing prompts about doing the right thing, friendships, and more.
Of course the stories are excellent as fun reads as well. There’s nothing wrong with just allowing your family to enjoy some excellent classic literature with no school work attached!
We loved the books. I appreciate the high quality of the books, and the fact that they are hardback. They’re a great price, as well. I know how my kids feel about them. They like them so much, they are already begging for the other 8 in the series!
