I was recently asked to review a fun product with my homeschoolers from Birdcage Press. I received Wild Cards: Baby Animals Around the World, and we immediately had to open the package to see what it was all about! We love playing games, and when I saw that this was educational and had gorgeous photos, I got really excited. My kids love animals – especially babies!

Birdcage Press is a trusted name in books and games. They’ve won multiple awards and are sold in museums nationwide. That alone immediately sets them apart and shows you the quality of their products.

This set includes 36 playing cards and a 28 page fact book. There are 2 of each card, and then each animal is in a numbered set (1-6), which lends itself to playing a variety of games. Each set includes 3 different animals.
Wild Cards: Baby Animals Around the World retails for $10.95 and is recommended for ages 6+. I used the set with my children aged 3, 6, and 8. They all enjoyed it! There are many ways to use the cards to play games, such as playing Old Maid, concentration, or Go Fish.
The cool thing about these cards is that you don’t actually have to play any game at all! The cards have full color, beautiful photos and plenty of facts and information about where the animals are from and special information related to them. During game play, my kids got distracted with the pictures and words every now and then, so we would pause the game to read the cards. This really encouraged some informal learning time, and since they were the ones interested in hearing more, they retained the information and told me about it later in the week as if they were the experts.

Our favorite way to play was Go Fish. The kids enjoyed finding sets of cards. My 6 year old totally smoked the rest of us with his 4 pairs! Pictured ahead, you can see my measly two. 🙂
I recommend this game to other families! It would make a great game for long waits at appointments, for taking along camping, or for family game night.
I could definitely see us using this game for years to come. Since my 3 year old was able to use it, too, it makes it a great resource for animal studies for all of my big kids! If you know me, you know how much I appreciate products that I can use with several kids at a time.
My kids enjoyed initiating and playing games by themselves, too. I love having an educational (and fun) resource around that I don’t have to necessarily supervise all the time. It warmed my heart to see my 3 year old flipping through the booklet that came with it and asking my 8 year old to read some fact to him.
If your kids love games and enjoy learning about animals, Wild Cards: Baby Animals Around the World would be a worthwhile investment. It’s a game the whole family will rave about!
