Celebrate Valentine’s Day Mad Men-style!
February 14, 1962
On Valentine’s Day 1962, First Lady Jaqueline Kennedy took Americans on the first-ever televised tour of The White House. Carried live on all three major networks of the time (ABC, CBS and NBC), fifty-six million Americans tuned in, including Don and Betty Draper, Sal and Kitty Romano and Greg and Joan Harris.
In their New York apartment, Greg tries to seduce Joan but her eyes are glued to the television. Sal and Kitty share pineapple upside down cake as they follow the glamorous First Lady. Don and Betty are in a room at the Savoy-Plaza hotel Don has taken to ensure a very romantic Valentine’s Day. When Don orders BLT’s on white toast from room service, Betty takes the phone. She wants something more stylish, including a crabmeat stuffed avocado.
If you didn’t receive (or give) a copy of The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook for the holidays, Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion to correct that oversight! You’ll find recipes for the pineapple upside down cake Sal and Kitty love, the avocado crabmeat mimosa The Kennedy’s served at a state dinner for the president of Pakistan in the summer of 1961, and more than 70 other recipes from the kitchens, bars and restaurants seen in Mad Men.

The recipes are really neat!  It really is like stepping back to the time period of the show and getting a piece of Classic Americana.  There are some neat cocktail recipes, great appetizer recipes, and so many unique little tidbits of information.  I thumbed through it for over an hour and dog-eared a lot of things I want to try next time we’re invited to a party or host one at our home.  If you know any Mad Men enthusiasts, you really should consider purchasing this for them as the perfect gift!

    My mom and I kept hearing great things about Mad Men, so we bought the first season on Amazon a couple months back. We couldn’t even finish the first episode!!! WE WERE THAT BORED!

    I’ve been trying to win the Natural Probiotics to try since Christmas. I want to try all of them, but especially the Sinky. Don’t watch Mad Men. Only have economy cable but then I only watch about 2-3 hrs of tv a week, not incl the News.

    I NEED Flushy! I’m terrified that something is going to go wrong in our septic tank. After living here for 4 years, and with 6 people in our household, I’m sure it’s PAST time to get the tank cleaned … but it’s gross and expensive! Ick!
