My kids use the internet a lot. Not only do we do most of our homeschool lessons based upon our online curriculum (Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool), but they love to play chess online, watch Minecraft videos, and play various free games. I try and make sure that we’re practicing safe internet usage for kids, but I am always open to ways to keep kids safe online!
In honor of today (February 11th) being Safer Internet Day, I received an email from NetSmartz.org with a few ideas, and I’m going to add in some of my own, too!
- Establish some basic rules for Internet use such as which websites children may visit and for how long.
- Ask to see their social media accounts. Find out who they’re talking to and what they’re posting.
- Check mobile devices to see what apps they’re using and if they’re texting responsibly.
- Talk about issues such as cyberbullying and sexting. Make sure they know they can come to you if they have a problem.
- Find tips and discussion starters at NetSmartz.org to keep the conversation going.
To add to this list, I would say:
- Add filters to your browsers, Youtube account, Google search results, etc.
- Put an adblock on your browsers. Those pesky ads are often a gateway to inappropriate content.
- Keep your devices and their use right out in the open. Placing computers and other devices in family rooms can cut down on questionable online behaviors or website visits.
- Make sure you have updated anti-virus software. Inadvertent clicks to strange websites (or even familiar ones) can open the door to nasty bugs, so protect your family.
Here is a video with some Internet Safety Basics for you to watch to get even more ideas and information to keep your children safe online.
NetSmartz Workshop is an interactive, educational program of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC) that provides age-appropriate resources to help teach children how to be safer on- and offline. The program is designed for children ages 5-17, parents and guardians, educators, and law enforcement. With resources such as videos, games, activity cards, and presentations, NetSmartz entertains while it educates.

My kids aren’t old enough to get unsupervised internet time but this information is so important and I will for sure keep this in my back pocket for later! Thanks for sharing!
