I was recently made part of the LeapFrog Mom Squad, which is an Ambassador program with the popular children’s brand. My family couldn’t be more thrilled! We have been enjoying LeapFrog product for over a decade now, and I’m proud to represent them and to share with other parents.
Thanks to this ambassadorship, my family will be receiving shipments of products throughout the year to review and test. I’ll be blogging about them and letting you know what’s new in the world of children’s educational products and games.
Today, I get to tell you about the LeapFrog Platinum Tablet and the fun Imagicard games that you can play with on there.
First, I have to say that although the LeapFrog Platinum Tablet is recommended for kids aged 3-9, my 10 year old wanted to get in on the action as well. She has played with it quite a bit. She’ll say it has been to help her brother, but I’ve caughter her on it without him, too!
The LeapFrog Platinum is a 7″ Tablet designed with kids in mind. The screen is big, there’s a kid-friendly (attached) stylus, it comes loaded with 10 apps, and it uses WiFi access. Parents can purchase apps from the LeapFrog app store, or you can pick up new packages of Imagicard games.
The tablet does come with a few Imagicard learning cards so you can try it out and see what it is all about. Basically, your child will use the corresponding app to take a picture of the Imagicard, and it will come to life on the screen! For example, on an alphabet game, it may ask you to take a picture of a specific letter of the alphabet to fit into the game’s story line or to fill in a blank on a word.
My 3 year old and 6 year old have been the main users of the system. BOTH boys just love to play with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles Imagicard game. For this, we used the code inside the Imagicard set to download the TMNT app, and throughout the game (which is comic-book style in parts) it will ask them to take a picture of one of the various TMNT Imagicards so that the character will come to life in the game.
Another game my 3 year old loves is the demo cooking game. I may have to break down and get the full version soon. 🙂 He is obsessed with helping in the kitchen, so he loves that one. There’s also a mini game in the TMNT Imagicard game that has you build a pizza with toppings they specify. He loves that one, too, and he is practicing his counting and sorting!
My 3 year old also likes to play with the included messaging app on the Platinum. We do not have another system linked to it for him to message, so it is just messaging on the tablet itself. His favorite part is choosing the little animated icons to send.
His favorites are the dinosaur and sometimes he’ll pick a rubber ducky or another cute one. He’s just a wee bit obsessed with green dinos right now. He can play this way for 15 minutes. It cracks me up!
You can choose from over 1,000 games if you’d like to find some apps that your child would love (sold separately). There are so many good ones to choose from, and they have an educational component to them, even if the child doesn’t realize it! There are science, math, reading, writing, and creativity-inspiring games.
There is also a place that you can enable in the game to allow kids to use wi-fi to explore the web in a safe environment. It is a heavily restricted browser that includes only videos and other content that has been screened and approved as appropriate and safe for even the youngest kids by learning experts.
My kids love that they can have their own accounts, so the progress they make on different games stays with them and can’t be messed up by their siblings. They are also able to customize their wallpaper (my 3 year old took a picture of his 11 month old brother for his – awwww!) and their avatar, which is shown on the welcome screen.
